Propeller 2.0 Is Out

Long awaited upgrade to Propeller, a social news site, was released today. Propeller incorporated a new design, new technology powering the site, and new features.

Propeller2.0

This new design has a deeper integration with AOL News and AOL.com (where Propeller posts have begun popping up in the top box). The new design is likely to be noticed first. The logo has changed which shows it’s community and stories as moons orbiting the Propeller planet. Also they redesign the propeller engine to improve the performance.

Here are some other changes you will notice:

  • New Ranking Scale: Instead of seeing an absolute count of votes next to a story, you will now see a Popularity Rating from 1-10. The scale is based on a new set of ranking algorithms, which take into account many more aspects of participation when determining popularity.
  • Prop It!: "Vote It" is changed to "Prop It" as they find that "Vote" seemed too serious, especially with the elections coming up.
  • Groups: Users now have the ability to join groups and form groups of their own. Groups can be open to the public, or membership can be limited. Once you have joined a group, you can share stories and start conversations on topics of interest.
  • Help!: There is a new Help Central area, where it consolidates Frequently Asked Questions and explain a bit more about Propeller.
  • New and Improved Search: Not only has searching for stories returned, but new features allow for searching members and groups. Looking for that long-lost Propeller friend, or for some esoteric group? Now you can find them!
  • Featured Groups and Members: To reward the movers and shakers in the community, members and groups will be featured on the homepage. This is an improvement on the old Top Propeller Contributors, since the featured member will have his or her avatar and biographical info displayed front and center!
  • This Just In: The Propeller Tracker has a new name, This Just In.
  • No More On Shift Icons for Editors and Scouts
  • Category Consolidation: Categories are now Arts & Entertainment, Business & Finance, Family, Humor, News, Science & Technology, Sports and Style.

AOL Launched a Personal Finance Site WalletPop.com

AOL announced the launch of WalletPop, a new personal finance site and a spin-off of AOL Money & Finance, http://money.aol.com. The new site will help consumers survive and thrive in today’s economy by focusing on all aspects of consumer and personal finance, while AOL Money & Finance will continue to focus on business and investing news, tools and analysis.  AOL Money & Finance is one of the most visited finance sites, with more than 15.2 million unique visitors each month and more page views than any other financial site. (source: comScore MediaMetrix, June 2008)

In addition to WalletPop, AOL Money & Finance recently launched real-time quotes on its stock pages, a new financial video hub and has upgraded many of its investing and portfolio management tools. AOL Money & Finance currently features CNBC video content and continues to add more video content partners.

“WalletPop provides consumers something they increasingly need: a comprehensive, accessible, and community oriented site focused exclusively on the money matters of real people, such as debt management, finding the best deals, saving, retirement, insurance, mortgages, banking, taxes and more,” said Marty Moe, Senior Vice President, AOL Money & Finance, Weblogs, News, Sports and KOL. "With the launch of WalletPop, along with the new features on our main AOL Money & Finance site, there is no more comprehensive and useful group of financial sites available."

The growing stable of WalletPop bloggers includes well-known consumer finance experts, and the lineup of original features will offer a compelling vehicle for advertising partners to reach an engaged and targeted audience.

WalletPop and Money & Finance are supported by AOL’s digital advertising business, Platform-A, http://www.platform-a.com, which will continue to offer relevant advertising opportunities in both display advertising as well as content-targeted links on the Web site, with ad-rich areas including taxes, mortgages, insurance, banking, debt management and retirement.

New features and tools include:

Latest Deals from the Web: Powered by Relegence, this will provide real-time information on deals aggregated from sites across the Web. For example, WalletPop users will know within minutes if a deal site reports a heavily-discounted item, http://walletpop.aol.com/deals.

Q&A with Experts: Consumers can enter a question and experts, as well as community members, will answer.  WalletPop marks the first major AOL site integration with Yedda, a question and answer platform acquired by AOL last year, http://walletpop.aol.com/community/money-experts.

The Economizer: The Economizer is AOL's hub for surviving and thriving in today's economy. This section will pull money-saving content from across the AOL network and provide it in one convenient location to help consumers cut costs, get deals, make more and beat debt. It is filled with tools, tips and the latest information from WalletPop, AOL Money & Finance, AOL Small Business, MapQuest, AOL Travel, AOL Autos, AOL Health and more. For example, MapQuest’s gas portal provides information on gas prices for more than 100,000 stations around the country as well as stations offering diesel and alternative fuels. Users can input a zip code and see a comparative list of gas prices in a specific area, http://walletpop.aol.com/economizer.

Daily Deal: Each day, WalletPop bloggers will identify a great money saving deal either online or offline for users to take advantage of and to share, http://www.walletpop.com/category/daily-deal/.

Ask the Dolans: In addition to regular blog posts, each Friday, renowned money experts Ken & Daria Dolan will answer a money question via video posed by a reader and chosen by the WalletPop editorial team, http://www.walletpop.com/category/the-dolans/.

In addition to the above, WalletPop, which was originally launched as a consumer blog last year, will include daily and breaking news feeds, personal finance tips, photo galleries, video, quizzes, blog posts on consumer and personal finance and more.

Last.fm Launched For iPhone and iPod Touch… It’s FREE

Last.fm announced the launch of Last.fm on the iPhone and iPod Touch! Go to the music category of the iTunes App store (in iTunes or on your iPhone/Touch). Find the Last.fm app and download it for free. Log in or signup to Last.fm and you’ll be presented with a fairly obvious selection of Last.fm functionality. Things with the red circle icon start streaming. You can navigate through the menus and go back with the button in the upper left.

Last.fm iPhone Demo from Toby on Vimeo.

Once you start streaming something, you’ll have access to the familiar Last.fm contextual items (love, ban, skip… tagging will be in the next version). You can also check out the artist bio, similar artists and events (particularly cool). If there are current events for the now playing artists, you can specify if you’re attending or not and go to a Google map for the event location.

There’s a lot you can do in this app, but the interface is pretty slick so hopefully it will all be pretty discoverable.

There ARE a couple caveats…

First of all this application is available in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany and Spain. However you will find it for other countries soon.

Secondly, there are no background applications allowed on the iPhone/Touch. There are several implications to this, but what it mostly means is any time you click a link that loads Safari, the music will stop and you’ll have to restart the app. This means event maps, and bio links. Last.fm team is looking at alternatives, but for now that’s the breaks.

To end with a bit of icing, the app knows how to read lastfm:// links. That means if you’re browsing the Last.fm website on the iPhone and click a “play in software” link, the app will start streaming for you! It’s neat, you’ll see.

This is version 1.0, so you will expect some cool stuff in the next revisions.

5. It automatically mirrors each page, never know when you might need a backup.

6. Most important for professional applications, you can access all the data about each page through a simple XML or JSON interface. Example.

AideRSS launches PostRank.com and Thematic PostRank™

PostRank, a scoring system developed by AideRSS to rank online content, such as RSS feed items, blog posts, articles, or news stories, has launched a whole bunch of things that will make the AideRSS experience even better!

1) PostRank.com website

Now PostRank is an independent of AideRSS. Any developer can now integrate PostRank into his/her application to take advantage of it’s social engagement analysis. On the PostRank site, you’ll find a lot of material that exposes how it tracks engagement: the AideRSS model of the 5C’s of engagement, which sources they track, etc.

2) Thematic PostRank™

Any user or developer can now use PostRank platform to rank any arbitrary set of online articles, i.e. they don’t have to come from the same feed like before. It will still support the Feed-based PostRank model, but now you can also define your own context, e.g. a folder in Google Reader, a collection of technology articles — e.g. articles about Microsoft from ZDNet, TechCrunch, Mashable, etc.

3) Google Reader Extension with Thematic PostRank

To showcase Thematic PostRank, company has officially launched it’s Google Reader extension with the new built-in ranking mechanisms and a collection of other speed improvements. As a user, you will get Feed-based PostRank whenever you are browsing a single feed, and when you switch to a folder or All Items view, you will be using Thematic PostRank, which will help you find the top articles in that context.

4) New APIs and more data sources

Rebuilt from the ground up: faster, more sources, and no caching delays. Plus, it is now tracking clicks and views from Google Reader through it’s widgets and through partners. In other words, if you install this widget on your page, PostRank will take into account the number of pageviews for each page, as well as clicks on the links. Last but not least, company also announced live tracking of Ma.gnolia bookmarks and Pownce messages.

VideoEgg Introduced New Ad Feature

videoegg VideoEgg, the rich media ad network that guarantees brand engagement, introduced new features to give advertisers more effective engagement with users inside social environments at a guaranteed engagement price. The new features offer the following benefits to marketers:

  • LIVE: Use real-time RSS feeds to continually update the ad experience
  • LOCAL: Deliver zip code-specific messaging
  • RICH: Easily deploy and track a rich multi-video ad experience to increase user interactivity
  • SHOP: Bring the browser to the user, merchandising multiple items in a single real-time ad experience
  • SHARE: Viral capabilities help spread the message through virtually any communication or social channel

The new features also enable marketers to better target vertical sectors, beginning with the automotive, entertainment, retail and wireless industries. VideoEgg’s automotive solution, for example, allows an ad unit to display nearby dealerships in interactive maps, while the entertainment industry can target local consumers by adding nearby movie listings to theatrical previews.

Leading brands such as Sprint and Puma are using VideoEgg’s network to connect users with brand content and encourage sharing across many social environments, such as Facebook, MySpace and Digg.

"VideoEgg provides an extremely rich ad experience with viral tools that let consumers accelerate and perpetuate our media buys," said Edward McLoughlin, Media Director at Mindshare Interaction. "The VideoEgg pricing model also provides accountability as it guarantees engagement with our target audiences."

VideoEgg offers brands an unprecedented approach to advertising, with a pricing model based on cost per engagement (CPE) that delivers accountability and unmatched insight into ad effectiveness. Ads are served for free, and advertisers pay only when a user engages with their brand content, providing a risk-free method to distributing highly targeted rich media content. In just four months since launching its CPE engagement model , over 50 leading brands including Hershey’s, Fox, Adidas, Nike, Comcast, Disney, GM, Mazda and Microsoft have advertised across the VideoEgg network for guaranteed engagement.

"The ad experience is ripe for innovation," said Troy Young, chief marketing officer, VideoEgg. "We need to replace the banner with portable media experiences that leverage the power of video, feeds, maps and localization. We can get consumers to engage—we just have to make online advertising more interesting."

TweetDeck Enables Users to Split Their Tweets Into Topic Or Group Specific Columns

TweetDeck is a new service build for twitter. It is an Adobe Air desktop application that is currently in private beta. It aims to evolve the existing functionality of Twitter by taking an abundance of information i.e twitter feeds, and breaking it down into more manageable bite sized pieces.

image

Once created these additional columns will automatically update allowing the user to keep track of a twitter threads far easier.

Being database driven TweetDeck allows the user to continue twittering even when offline. Tweets and direct messages are queued and then sent automatically when back online. This offline functionality also applies if Twitter is down.
