Digg Is About To Launch “Digg Recommendation Engine” This Week

image Digg is always adding something new and interesting. Kevin Rose announced today that they are going to roll out a new feature called “Digg Recommendation Engine” beginning this week.

The feature will be in beta and presented to registered Digg users first, based on a random sampling of logged-in users. Look for the red beta flag on your Upcoming tab - this means you now have access to the Recommendation Engine. It will be rolled out to everyone within the week or so.

The Recommendation Engine is a cool way to discover new content on Digg. Now that there are more than 16,000 stories submitted to the Upcoming section every day, it’s difficult to sort through everything to find the best content. The Recommendation Engine uses your past digging activity to identify what we call Diggers Like You (who you can see on the right hand nav) to suggest stories you might like.

You can see a video preview of Recommendation Engine here:

Digg’s Lead Scientist Anton Kast says more about how it works during an interview:

You can also read more about the Recommendation Engine in Anton’s Whitepaper.

As you increase your activity on Digg, the Recommendation Engine will get to know you better and will suggest more targeted content and Diggers Like You. You can always remove specific users from the Recommendation Engine by clicking on the user name and selecting ‘remove from Recommendation Engine.

Photobucket Launches Digg Integration Featuring Popular Photos

image Photobucket, one of the Web’s most popular hubs for managing personal media, yesterday announced an integration with Digg, the popular social media site that harnesses the collective wisdom of the world’s online audience to prioritize the overwhelming amount of content available on the Web. The integration coincides with the launch of Digg’s dedicated images section later today, giving millions of Photobucket users the ability to “Digg” photos on Photobucket.

As part of Photobucket’s integration with Digg, the following features will be added:

Photobucket Digg Buttons - Digg buttons will be added to all photos in the public “Find Stuff” tab on Photobucket, allowing users to submit content to Digg.

Digg Channel on Photobucket - A dedicated Digg channel will be added under a “Popular” section within the “Find Stuff” tab. “Popular” will rank the most Dugg Photobucket images. This will bring a taxonomy to Photobucket, one of the largest banks of photos and images on the Web, allowing users to sort, vote and comment on photos.

Photobucket on Digg - Digg will link back to Photobucket’s Digg channel to display the most popular images as voted by the Digg community.

“Our integration with Digg marks another step toward Photobucket being one of the world’s most popular destinations for social media,” said Alex Welch, President of Photobucket. “Not only do people save, edit and share their own photos and videos, they come to browse a vast community of media. Giving the Photobucket community a chance to vote for the most interesting photos they find opens up a whole new way for our users to interact and share. As our users begin to Digg photos, we’ll develop more ways to rank and sort popular content.”

“Photobucket will undoubtedly be a rich source of photos for people to share on Digg’s dedicated images section, which goes live today,” said Jay Adelson, CEO of Digg. “Photobucket’s integration with Digg is a great example of the kinds of applications that can be created using the Digg API, and that leverages the Digg community as a collaborative filter for surfacing the most interesting content. Twenty-five million people a month visit Digg to discover and share the best content from anywhere on the Web.”

The Digg and Photobucket integration marks the latest development for Photobucket following the November 2007 launch of a new breed of photo tagging, giving users the ability to share tagged and linked photos across social networks and the Web. Photobucket tagging enables users to tag up to 20 names and links within a single photo before sharing them online by posting them on personal profile pages, blogs and other sites.

Photobucket users can start “Digging” later today (Monday, December 3, 2007).

Metacafe Launches Digg Channel

Metacafe, whose more than 25 million unique viewers each month make it one of the world’s largest video sites (comScore Media Metrix, July 2007), today launched its new Digg Channel. Now live at www.metacafe.com/digg, the channel showcases every Metacafe video that has ever been “Dugg.” Viewers can also easily find videos “Most Dugg” and “Recently Dugg” on Digg, an innovative site that harnesses the collective wisdom of the world’s online audience to prioritize the overwhelming amount of content available on the Web.

By combining input from these two community-powered sites, Metacafe is providing another way to discover videos that prove most popular among viewers. With the addition of the Digg Channel, viewers can now see what videos members of the Digg community prefer in addition to what fares well among the entire Metacafe community. The Digg Channel is being promoted throughout the Metacafe website, and Digg is currently showcasing the channel on the Digg website.

“The Digg Channel illustrates our commitment to putting viewers in charge of their online entertainment experience,” said Erick Hachenburg, CEO of Metacafe. “Like Digg, we are all about exposing the content our community deems best and making it easy for people to discover something they’re likely to enjoy. This shared philosophy makes the Digg Channel a great addition to our site.”

Metacafe is known for utilizing audience feedback to surface the most entertaining videos. Its community review panel of more than 80,000 volunteers takes a first look at each of the thousands of videos submitted to the site each day. And its VideoRankTM system gauges each viewer’s interactions with and reactions to a video, automatically showcasing those that elicit the best response.

Everything on Digg is submitted and voted on by the Digg community, making it easy for people to discover and share interesting items from anywhere on the web. The new Digg Channel utilizes the recently released Digg Application Programming Interface (API), which allows Metacafe to easily integrate Digg data into its own site in real time.

Digg find a new ad provider

Kevin Rose announced yesterday that they have signed on Microsoft as new partner to sell and serve the ads on Digg. It’s a deal similar to the one Facebook signed with Microsoft last year.

"This move gives us an advertising partner with a larger organization and a more scalable technology platform to keep pace with Digg’s growth. Best of all, it lets the Digg team completely focus on new feature development. Federated Media, which has been an awesome partner for the last year and a half, will continue working with Digg focusing on integrated sponsorships and custom programs like the Arc project in labs" said Kevin Rose.

As part of the relationship, Microsoft will be the exclusive provider of display and contextual advertising on Digg. The two companies also agreed to work together on future technology and advertising initiatives.

“Our collaboration with Digg is about bringing our advertising technology and sales force to one of the fastest-growing sites on the Web and a true innovator in user-generated content,” said Steve Berkowitz, senior vice president of the Online Services Group at Microsoft. “We believe advertisers will welcome Microsoft and Digg’s combined strengths to forge more meaningful connections online.”

Microsoft and Federated Media Publishing, Digg’s current advertising partner, plan to collaborate to bring integrated programs to Digg’s users and advertisers. “Federated Media has unique advertising sales assets that dovetail with our efforts, and we look forward to working with them,” Berkowitz said...
