Almost a year back, Gmail has added emotions to Gmail's built-in chat. However yesterday gmail team announced the addition of smileys or better known as emoticons to Gmail.
In order to use this feature, you must have to compose an email with rich text formatting enabled. Below is a screen shot of how it looks like in a Gmail compose screen:
