QUALCOMM granted Exoteq to use a patent license for OFDM/OFDMA technologies

QUALCOMM Incorporated, a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies and data solutions, and Exoteq Aps, a mobile broadband solutions developer based in Denmark, today announced the companies have signed a new, commercial OFDM/OFDMA license agreement. Under the terms of the worldwide, royalty-bearing agreement, QUALCOMM has granted Exoteq a patent license to develop, manufacture and sell subscriber unit and modem card products for high-speed mobile broadband access based on OFDM/OFDMA technologies, including QUALCOMM's FLASH-OFDM technology. The royalties payable by Exoteq are at QUALCOMM's standard OFDM/OFDMA rates.

"This OFDM/OFDMA agreement will enable Exoteq to enhance its mobile broadband capabilities by offering solutions that incorporate QUALCOMM's patented OFDM/OFDMA technologies for multimedia content delivery to mobile handsets,” said Marv Blecker, president of QUALCOMM Technology Licensing. “QUALCOMM is pleased to work with Exoteq to enable new advanced mobile broadband devices in Finland initially, and eventually worldwide.”

“We are very pleased to now have access to QUALCOMM's extremely valuable patent portfolio for OFDM/OFDMA technologies and its FLASH-OFDM system is one of the first truly mobile broadband technologies available,” said Mr. Ilkka Martikainen, founder and CEO of Exoteq. “We have chosen to develop our first products using this technology and provide our customers with high-speed, low latency devices at affordable prices. FLASH-OFDM has already been commercially deployed on such a scale that the market size is viable for us. With this agreement, we are able to offer mobile VoIP, broadband Internet, email, instant messaging and streaming video and music on demand through our first product, the Exoteq Meos mobile broadband handset.”

OFDM : Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. A wireless communications technology and modulation technique that divides available spectrum into multiple radio frequency (RF) channels. In OFDM, a single transmitter transmits on many different, independent frequencies, which typically results in a signal with high resistance to interference.

OFDMA : Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access. Wireless technology based on OFDM that offers forward- and reverse-link communications and broadband data speeds to support applications such as VPN access, video downloads and large file transfers.
